Outliers: KKBQ Jumps On Drake Milligan After ‘AGT’ Performance.

Since Howie Mandel called Drake Milligan “the new Elvis of country” on “America’s Got Talent” June 7, Cox Media Group “93Q” KKBQ Houston has played the 23-year-old singer’s “Sounds Like Something I’d Do” — the song he performed on the show — more than 70 times.

CMG Houston Director of Operations Travis Moon “has had his eyes on this song and this artist for six months waiting for something,” Stoney Creek Records VP/Innovation, Radio & Streaming Adrian Michaels tells Country Insider. “When it popped so good on TV he just called and said, ‘I'm not waiting. I’m in.’”

“Sounds Like Something I’d Do” appeared on Milligan’s self-titled EP, which Tony Brown produced and which Stoney Creek released in July 2021. Though “America’s Got Talent” wasn’t Milligan’s first national television appearance — he appeared as Elvis Presley in CMT’s 2017 series “Sun Records” and successfully auditioned for “American Idol” the following year — it’s by far the best platform he’s had to introduce his music.

Milligan’s record also is picking up spins from Inner Harbor Media WOLF Syracuse, NY (92.1). Michaels hopes other stations join KKBQ when AGT’s live rounds begin in August.

“We’re going to try to grow this organically from the TV pop that we got,” Michaels says. “It’s a two-minute-and-32-second uptempo country song that leans a little 90s sounding, which is what everybody's talking about. I think we have a current artist that has a sound that's missing from the fabric of the format, and I think the audience rewarded him for it.”
